Ocean to Sound Relay Hits the Massapequas

Runners from all over the New York Metropolitan area and beyond are cordially invited to put together teams to participate in the 21st annual Ocean to Sound Relay, on Sunday, Sept. 10.

The Relay brings the entire Long Island region together in an annual September tradition, with 150 teams of eight runners each traversing a 50- mile course that starts at 8 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park, heads north and east through Wantagh, Seaford, Massapequa, Farmingdale and Old Bethpage before crossing into Huntington, hitting the Long Island Sound at Lloyd Harbor, returning to Nassau County via Cold Spring Harbor and Syosset, and then heading north again to a dramatic finish on the grounds of Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay.

Each runner on the team runs a leg of between five and seven miles.

911 Center Receives Accreditation

The Emergency Communications Department for the city of Rochester and Monroe County received accreditation from the New York State Sheriff's Association.

The 911 center is only the sixth emergency center in the state to achieve that distinction. To do so, the agency had to meet 70 standards developed by experts in the emergency communications field.

"Accreditation is not available for the emergency centers which are merely good. We hope that all emergency communication centers are at least good. It is available, rather, for those agencies which are a cut above, for those agencies that set the standard, set the pace for other agencies to follow. I'm pleased to report the Rochester-Monroe County emergency center is one of those agencies," said Peter Kehoe, of the NYS Sheriff's Association.

Cayman students are awarded for 'Environmentality'

Disney Cruise Line honoured the Grand Prize Winners of the 2006 Jiminy Cricket's Environmentality Challenge on Tuesday 20 June in a special ceremony aboard the Disney Magic Cruise ship.

The prizewinners were all from Cayman schools, including the third-year class from George Town Primary School, the sixth-year class from St. Ignatius Catholic School, and the eleventh-year class from John Gray High School.

Winning classes had to show exemplary environmental skills in championing projects that included recycling, and making new items out of old, and replanting a garden in an abandoned area.

"These students are making a difference in the Cayman community and raising awareness for Environmentality everywhere," said Mark Witko, Disney Cruise Line Community and Government Relations Manager.

Portraying the wrong image

Some time ago, probably about 3-5 months ago, I remember visiting a club on Seven Mile Beach. As I entered the club, I noticed there was a quarrel taking place between a female security guard and a female patron who was in the process of leaving the establishment.

The security guard, from one of the smaller islands (I recognized the island from her accent), was speaking to the patron in a cool voice, telling the female patron that she had to leave. Apparently the female patron seemed very inebriated.

I stopped to listen to what was going on (perhaps foolishly so), and came to understand from the content of the conversation, and from onlookers nearby, that the female patron had apparently had too much to drink, and as she was being escorted out by her friend, I understood that the security guard had previously asked her to leave.
