Runners from all over the New York Metropolitan area and beyond are cordially invited to put together teams to participate in the 21st annual Ocean to Sound Relay, on Sunday, Sept. 10.
The Relay brings the entire Long Island region together in an annual September tradition, with 150 teams of eight runners each traversing a 50- mile course that starts at 8 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park, heads north and east through Wantagh, Seaford, Massapequa, Farmingdale and Old Bethpage before crossing into Huntington, hitting the Long Island Sound at Lloyd Harbor, returning to Nassau County via Cold Spring Harbor and Syosset, and then heading north again to a dramatic finish on the grounds of Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay.
Each runner on the team runs a leg of between five and seven miles.

On 3 June 2006, four months of rigorous training in law relating to theft, burglary, robbery, traffic and General Police law, as well as training in self-defence and First Aid, officially came to an end for an eleven-member Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) recruit team.
It was only the second RCIPS group to go through, and complete recruit training since Hurricane Ivan disrupted the rhythm of these programmes in 2004.
The Department of Rehabilitation/Welfare Services is today better equipped for their challenging work because of a comprehensive social study which had been carefully documented and was last week presented to representatives of the Department and the Government of The Bahamas.
The 184-page study, "The Phenomenological Essences of the Arrested Male Youths in their Relationships with their Parents " was a March 2006 dissertation by Dr Earl Anthony White, as partial fulfilment for the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Capella University in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
As part of the research Dr White, son of Bahamian journalist P. Anthony White, with the cooperation of the Department of Rehabilitation/Welfare Services, last year conducted studies of eight youths, ages raging from 13 to 21 years, most of them residents of the Simpson C.
HOTELS on Grand Cayman are forecasting that 2007 will be a great year for their business, barring manmade and natural disasters.
The Cayman Islands Tourism Association (CITA) - the umbrella body for the hoteliers - told Cayman Net News that its members are very satisfied with occupancy levels at the moment.
\Executive Director of CITA Ken Thompson said the response from hotel managers reveals that stay-over tourism is getting stronger and they expected a boom in 2007.
"They're expecting to do well in 2007 and barring a catastrophe it will be a great year," he said. Using 2004 as the benchmark, the industry officials believe that 2006 is actually a comeback year, given the terror attacks in the US in 2001 and Hurricane Ivan in 2004.
Cayman Brac High School student Brendan Wahler won the inaugural Adventures in Citizenship essay contest conducted by the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman.
Mr. Wahler was announced the winner of four finalists during the Rotary Club’s regular weekly luncheon meeting at the Westin Casuarina Resort on Thursday.
Alphasoft’s Vicky Wheaton presented Mr. Wahler with a laptop computer as the grand prize for his efforts.
Minister of Tourism Charles Clifford was on hand at the Rotary meeting to congratulate Mr. Wahler and the other finalists, who were also in attendance.
Other finalists included Krystal Hydes from Triple C School; Erin Hislop from Cayman Prep and High School; and Chanelle Ramoon of John Gray High School.
All of the essayists were asked to write on the subject ‘My Cayman’.
In 1920, artist and illustrator Wilmot Emerton Heitland built a French country farmhouse on the Five Mile River in Darien.
He was living in an old farmhouse with an attached studio in Noroton Heights. He purchased the land for his new home, a rocky point covered with trees, from a local fisherman.
Born in Superior, Wis., Heitland first studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. At 20, he won the Cresson traveling scholarship and went off to the Academie Colarossi in Paris, attended by artists such as Amedeo Modigliani, Norman Rockwell and sculptor Jacques Lipschitz. Heitland also attended classes at the Art Students League of New York.

Thirty-one children were registered to enter this year's tournament, though the threat of bad weather kept six of them away, and twenty-five in all grabbed rod and reel and headed off to catch some barracuda.
Eight-year-old Martha Rivers hauled up a fourteen and a half pounder, fishing from Scotts Dock in the West End, to win the heaviest fish caught by a child.
Her barracuda was almost three pounds heavier than that caught by the first place winner in the Boys category, Kodie Scott, who, like most other anglers, took to the sea to catch his 11.8 lb fish.
Kodie won three prizes in all, also taking a first for the most fish (twenty in all) and the heaviest total weight (156.7 lbs).
