In one of the more unusual school sports championships, a team from Saint Ignatius Catholic School triumphed in the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) School Sailing Championships at the Cayman Islands Sailing Club (CISC). Traditionally held at the culmination of the school year, the RBC School Sailing Championships enables teams from rival schools to compete against each other after a year of learning how to sail. RBC returned as the sponsor in 2006 after the event was postponed last year in the wake of Hurricane Ivan. Prior to the September 2004 hurricane, the RBC School Sailing Championships was one of the most exciting dates in the youth sports calendar in the Cayman Islands, and this year's event, held on 16 June, recaptured the unique spirit of past race days.
A tea party at the Heritage House for all the girls from Cayman Brac in tertiary education, hosted by the Brac Business and Professional Women's (BPW) Club, has become an annual tradition. Members of the Brac BPW send a small stipend to all girls from the Brac at college, and also send them letters of encouragement while they are away. This is in keeping with one of the stated aims of the Club: to encourage women and girls to acquire education, occupational training, and advanced education; and use their occupational capacities and intelligence for the advantage of others as well as themselves. The tea party provides a social situation in which the girls can chat informally with members and tell them how the school year has been, and also becomes an opportunity to discuss any problems they may have had, said Brac BPW President Claudette Upton.
An influential government advisory panel on Thursday recommended that 11- and 12-year-old girls be routinely vaccinated against the sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer. Gardasil is the first vaccine specifically designed to prevent cancer. Earlier this month, the Food and Drug Administration approved the vaccine for females between 9 and 26 years old. It protects against strains of the human papilloma virus, or HPV, which causes cervical cancer. Researchers at Strong Hospital played a role in developing the vaccine. “Initially, in vaccine development at the lab level, we were part of developing the initial part of the vaccine," said Dr. Cynthia Rand. “And now we're also looking at opinions about the vaccine from both the perspective of parents and adolescents." The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices also recommended the shots can be started for girls as young as 9.
