Shed A Tear For Those Poor Hedge-Fund Managers,

Fed up with reading about hedge-fund managers' astronomical earnings and second yachts while you struggle along on 5,000 euros a month? Well, you can indulge in a little schadenfreude - May has been a miserable month for hedge funds and their managers according to market gossip, and the tax authorities are in hot pursuit of those Cayman Island properties.

The unexpected collapse in commodity prices in May and the resulting falls in emerging market stocks are said to have cost many hedge funds up to 5% of their value during the month. Most commodities funds seem to have stayed in their holdings far too long: some of them may have lost up to 25% or even more.

Meanwhile, in London, hedge fund managers who have been using offshore destinations to park their giant bonuses are facing an attack from the Inland Revenue.

Candidates focus on growth

Horry County Council District 2 spans from the lavish, upper-class neighborhoods along the coast in northern Myrtle Beach to the quickly developing rural areas around Nixonville and S.C. 90.

Four candidates are vying to replace Mark Lazarus and be the next representative for the area. The final decision will be made by district voters Tuesday and could sway the County Council's approach to growth issues.

Brent Schulz

When it comes to planning growth, Brent Schulz has a wide breadth of experience: He serves on the Horry County Planning Commission, has taught the subject and is a partner in one of the most prolific development design firms in the county, DDC Engineers.

"I think the County Council needs a planner on council," Schulz said.

Island Heritage celebrates ten years

Nigel Twohey, Marketing Director, Conor O'Dea, Chairman of the board, Mark Burns Vice Chairman and Bryan Murphy, CEO of Island Heritage.

As the Cayman Islands finally begins to see property insurance rates decrease from the high of 2.5 percent to 2.25 percent, Island Heritage celebrated its ten-year anniversary last week.

It had a lot to celebrate, especially with Hurricane Ivan still fresh in the minds of residents and Island Heritage secure that it came out of that event with a solid reputation for paying claims and staying solvent with an A minus rating from AM Best.

That is a notable achievement considering how many insurance companies in the region struggled to stay afloat after year on year of numerous devastating hurricanes.

The CEO of Island Heritage, Bryan Murphy, said the Caribbean region is likely to have higher property insurance rates from the impact of a long series of losses.

Bluff Shelters Planned

Several projects on the Bluff will eventually add hurricane shelter space on Cayman Brac, but none are ready for the start of this hurricane season.

According to Deputy District Commissioner Ernie Scott, the Day Care Centre next to the Aston Rutty Civic Centre (ARCC) will hopefully be finished in September, and the canopy at the entrance to the civic centre should be ready this weekend.

Quality Construction was awarded the contracts for both these projects. Mr Scott was confident the canopy would be completed in time for the Cayman Brac High School Graduation Ceremony on 24 June.

This addition, for pick-up and drop-off at the centre to protect people from the elements, both rain and sun, was made with both general and hurricane shelter use in mind, he said.

Eastern districts need more promotion say MLAs

Two Government MLAs want Cabinet to do more than pay lip service to tourism development in the eastern districts of North Side, East End and Bodden Town.

MLA for North Side Hon Edna Moyle and MLA for Bodden Town Osbourne Bodden used the Finance Committee meeting in Parliament last week to whip up support for their constituents.

Mrs Moyle, who is also the Speaker of the House, said she wants more attention paid to Rum Point a rapidly growing tourist area in her constituency.

She said that stay-over visitors who come to Rum Point boast of the area, saying if they knew about it before they would not have gone to the Seven Mile Beach.

We got to move away from the Seven Mile Beach, theres no land left there, she said.

Backbencher Mr Bodden called on Government to bite the bullet in facilitating prospective Caymanian business owners by subsidising them with capital.
