Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands are located in the Caribbean Sea to the north west of Jamaica and to the south of Cuba. This region is the economic centre of the Caribbean. The island group comprises of three islands: Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. The most developed island is the Grand Cayman, that is 8 miles in width and 22 miles in length. Regardless of being a British Overseas Territory, most of the visitors are Americans. It’s just about one and a half hours from Florida by air. With its short travelling time as well as English as the official language it is no surprise that thousands of Us citizens have a Cayman Islands vacation each year.

Cayman Islands have high living standards, and most of the population of these islands resides on Grand Cayman. The majority of the citizens are the Protestants of British or African descent and most of them are from the mixed racial ethnicity. The official language of Cayman Islands is English. People accents retain the elements passed down from English, Scottish, and Welsh settlers. Inhabitants of Jamaican origin converse in their own language. The history of Cayman Islands is affluent with stunning details, and the islands have a great weather. The coolest month is February, and the hottest month is in July.

Cayman IslandsThe old sea based sectors such as shipping and fishing have been replaced by tourism and finance as the main sources for the Islands economy, with many islanders employed in one or the other. The Cayman Islands attracts many international companies and citizens to relocate as a result of its success in the tourism and financial service industries.

The prosperity of the Cayman Islands originates from the distinction of having over 25,000 registered companies, and over 500 international financial institutions situated on their shores. The Cayman Islands have a unique registering system that allows businesses to be legitimately registered by just paying a fee. It’s no wonder the Cayman Islands are a safe haven for offshore investments which offer lucrative tax shelters.

The seas around the Caymans are one of the best in the world for water activities. There are many providers that can help to make the most of the seas, including snorkelling, diving, fishing and sailing. Scuba diving and snorkelling are the most favoured tourist activities in Cayman Islands especially at the Stingray City, the world’s best spot for a 10-foot dive. At Stingray City can also enjoy the adventure of swimming with many sea creatures.

Another prime attraction in the Caymans includes its powder-white sand which stretches out into the turquoise Caribbean Sea. Tiny reefs are often found off the shore and are favourite spot for snorkelers. Man-made reefs found in island resorts of the beach are also loved by beginners where numerous marine life forms are also artificially taken care in big marine aquariums.

Three new cruise ships sail to Cayman

WITH the Grand Princess due return to the Cayman Islands this winter season comes news that three new cruise ships are heading for Grand Cayman, beginning May 2007.

Marine and Cargo Manager at the Cayman Islands Port Authority Joseph Woods said the debut here on Monday of the Crown Princess signals an upswing in the number of cruise ship calls.

The Crown Princess, owned by Princess Cruises, berthed at the George Town Harbour with 3,300 passengers and is expected to make regular visits to Grand Cayman.

The ship made its inaugural voyage on 8 June in New York amid celebratory activities involving various stars.

Sister ship, Grand Princess, which was a regular Wednesday fixture here, will resume its Cayman route on 3 October after being diverted by Princess Cruises to a port in Mexico.

Almost a hurricane

It's shaping up to be another weird hurricane season, with the first little unorganized tropical depression of the year now an extremely powerful tropical storm churning just off Florida's Gulf Coast.

And it's getting stronger. The whole area is now under an official Hurricane Warning.

On Saturday morning, meteorologists were laughing at Tropical Depression No. 1, nature's first entry in the 2006 hurricane season.

"Overall, this is not a well organized system because of other atmospheric conditions surrounding this area," forecasters said early Saturday.

At that point, the littlest storm had winds that barely topped 30mph. But by late Saturday, Cuba and Grand Cayman were deluged.

On Sunday, the first tropical depression became the first tropical storm of 2006.

Walkers sees changes in Middle East private equity market

Law firm Walkers said this week that there has been rapid growth in the Middle East private equity market in both the number and size of funds. The firm reports that growth in the market is bolstered by the fact that typical private equity fund structures are consistent with Shari'ah principles of sharing in risks and rewards commensurate with capital contributions, making private equity investments particularly attractive to Islamic investors. "A confluence of factors in the region such as high oil prices, the real estate boom, a marked increase in infrastructure development and privatizations -- as well as the stellar returns for PE from the IPO market over a short history -- could lead to a tripling of the size of the region's private equity industry over the next five years," Rod Palmer, Managing Partner of the Walkers Dubai office, said.

Arizona Weekly fishing report -- June 24

Aquatic nuisance species can hitch a ride on our clothing, boats, and items used in the water. When we go to another lake or stream, the nuisance species can be released. Learn more.

Rorys Tip:

With soaring desert temperatures, night fishing has been the ticket for many anglers on the central Arizona lakes, especially under lights with the moon waning this week. Good reports are coming in from most lakes, particularly Lake Pleasant, Roosevelt Lake and Alamo Lake.

Striper fishing continues to be hot at Lake Powell and Lake Mead. Bass fishing has been picking up on Havasu and the Lower Colorado. Topwater is good early in the morning and late in the evening.

Mid-day fishing has slowed down at many high country lakes, so trout fishing is best at first and last light.

Party in the Caribbean

The picture-book smaller islands are mostly in the eastern Caribbean, or Lesser Antilles. They occupy a 600-mile sweep from Anguilla in the north to Trinidad in the south. Internal flights and ferry services make island-hopping possible, although inter-island flights can be pricey.

Which island should I choose?
Barbados, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Antigua, Cuba, St Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada and the Cayman Islands are the 10 Caribbean islands most visited by British holidaymakers.

Each one has its own personality. Barbados, for example, is famous for its golden sand beaches and a five-week summer event called the Crop Over Festival, with floats, music, parades and dancing. Honeymooners like laidback St Lucia's lazy days and Antigua's many 18th century colonial forts make it a good option for history buffs.

Hands in Praise visits the Cayman Islands

The Hands in Praise team, from the Caribbean Christian Centre for the Deaf, located at Mandeville, Jamaica, visited the Cayman Islands for just over a week recently. They toured all three Islands, giving praise concerts in sign language, instead of singing.

The group is usually invited here once a year by the Cayman based group, Friends of the Deaf.

This year, however, the Department of Children and Family Services contacted Friends of the Deaf, to see if they could invite the Hands in Praise team over for Child Month.

Judy McTaggart, one of the founding members of Friends of the Deaf, said:

Department of Children and Family Services asked us to invite the group here as part of Child Month activities. They paid for their airfare, and accommodation, so that this has really been done with their assistance.
