Cayman Islands News, Articles and Information
The Cayman Islands are facing a very uncertain future, if the offshore companies cannot recruit and retain, not only the specialist staff they need, but the support staff as well, they will move their business to another jurisdiction. As has been noted for the longest time now, we therefore do not think that opening our big mouths is going to change too much either. This can and will be the straw that broke the camel's back and even though there is ridicule, disagreement, disgust and among other things, the Government is not about to listen to any advice or complaints because the thing called pride, and to sum it all up stupidity will not allow them to listen. A perfect example is the roundabouts in the Islands. Well, on that one I need to ask a question, "Where is Mr Road Planner's head?" Yes, we have and will see more dramatic situations where there will be more absurd policies, more hemorrhage, and a greater exodus of people from the Cayman Islands and more goodbyes to future developments that may have come to the Islands.
PORT ANTONIO -- Errol Flynn's love affair with Port Antonio began in the 1940s while he was on a sailing trip destined for the Galapagos.Back then, a storm blew his boat the "Zaca" off course to Jamaica and soon he discovered the island's northeast treasure. Port Antonio became Flynn's home for many years, and as he wrote in his memoir, "After thirty-seven years of wandering, I had found my Grecian isle."Now, the Marina at Port Antonio has been renamed the Errol Flynn Marina in tribute to the town's most famous resident. "It's amazing that even today Flynn's presence remains an undercurrent in Port Antonio," said William Tatham, Vice President of Cruise and Marina Operations. "The renaming of the Marina is merely an affirmation of what residents and visitors have known for a long time, that his mystique is still very much a part of the fabric of this part of Jamaica."After his initial visit to the island, Flynn would return to Port Antonio and his 2000-acre Errol Flynn Estates on hiatus between films.
In contrast to the constant buzz of traffic streaming down Front Street, walking into Richard Ground's office is like stepping into an oasis of calm. The odd car horn or revving engine from Bermuda's main thoroughfare might occasionally break the peace. But the noisy interruptions from the nearby road are nothing compared to the cacophony of protest in some quarters that greeted his appointment as Chief Justice two years ago. The decision to give a non Bermudian the top legal job triggered anger from many in Government circles. Premier Alex Scott made little secret of the fact that he backed Puisne Judge Norma Wade-Miller, who has Bermuda status, ahead of the British candidate. That put the PLP on a very public collision course with Governor Sir John Vereker, who by backing Mr.
The fight against crime in Bermuda looks set to be boosted when the Cayman Islands sets up a hi-tech science laboratory. Edna Moyle, Speaker of the Cayman Islands legislative assembly, said her country was now establishing a full-service forensic laboratory to handle crime scene evidence. We have offered to open this service to sister territories and other regional interests that do not yet have such a capability, she told dignitaries at the Speakers Dinner at the Fairmont Southampton on Saturday night. Bermuda currently sends evidence to Canada for DNA testing ahead of major criminal trials. However, the option of flying samples over to Cayman could be a boost for Police. A Cayman Government web site said that the state-of-the-art science site would be a full-fledged DNA laboratory, headed by a Canadian expert.

The installation of off-site data replication systems, work stations and telecommunication equipment, and arrangements for uninterrupted supply of currency are all part of actions the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (CIMA) has taken to strengthen its preparedness, not only for the hurricane season but also for a range of events which could disrupt business. The Authority's current disaster recovery and business continuity plan was in development prior to Hurricane Ivan in 2004 and contributed to CIMA's ability to resume operations one week after that hurricane. The Authority has been enhancing the plan since that time. A major milestone was reached in May 2005 when the CIMA Board of Directors authorised the leasing of space and services at Deloitte's Disaster Recovery Centre at Citrus Grove, George Town.
Possible solutions to deal with flooding problems in Savannah will be made public in July, consultant engineer Mr. Steve Bolt said Tuesday night. Mr. Bolt was answering questions after a public meeting at the Savannah Primary School on the subject of flood and storm surge mitigation. A similar session was planned for Wednesday night as well. A brochure about the event referred to it as a public visioning meeting. Residents who attended were asked to look at a large map of the area and identify where they live. Depending on their answer, they were then asked to go to tables with even larger maps to relate their flooding experiences. Details included their location, the flood events, height of flooding, duration and frequency. Residents were also requested to fill out a questionnaire that included space for their additional comments and concerns.
